Getting valuable information from geospatial
imagery is often challenging the size of the image and the sheer number of pixels
to review can be both overwhelming and time consuming. To narrow the field of interest to
the areas most likely to contain important information, image analysts will often focus on
areas with anomalies. Now, ENVI users can make use of the ENVI RX Anomaly Detection Tool,
to quickly identify anomalies, or features in an image that are different from the overall
image background.
Anomaly detection is used for a wide variety of applications including identifying locations of crop stress for precision agriculture applications, infected tree locations for forestry applications, and rare minerals for geology applications. In defense and intelligence scenarios, applications include detecting targets such as military vehicles and identifying soil disturbances that might indicate land mines or recent troop movements. The ENVI RX Anomaly Detection Tool is a free plug-in for ENVI that uses the popular RXD anomaly detection algorithm in its classic form to extract anomalous features from spectral images. This new ENVI tool provides a one-button solution for identifying anomalies in images, making it ideal for ENVI users of all abilities. Users need only select the input file and the tool highlights the pixels that are different from the general image background. No expert knowledge of ENVI or image processing is required to quickly process images and create accurate, easy-to-interpret results that are unambiguous and useful for a wide range of situations. Following the detection of anomalies, other tools, such as the ENVI Spectral Analyst, can be used to address the identification of the anomalous features, if desired.
